Today Governor Cuomo signed into law the proposed stricter penalties for distracted drivers that had been discussed in Albany recently. The new law affects less experienced drivers, specifically those who possess junior or probationary licenses. Under the terms of the new law, a first offense for being caught texting while driving is an automatic loss of license for sixty days upon conviction. If convicted again, the driver loses his or her license for six months. The new penalty comes on the heels of the law last month that increased license points for any driver caught texting from three to five points.
