Rehabilitation Worker, Jacky Stanly, Convicted of 33 Counts of Sex Abuse

Jacky Stanley, a former rehabilitation worker at Northeast Center for Special Care in Lake Katrine, New York was convicted of sexually abusing six male residents at the facility – each of whom were in the facility after suffering traumatic brain injuries. All six male residents testified in court that Stanley molested them in some way – either by performing oral sex on them, or by “rubbing or trying to touch” their genitals. Despite the prosecution providing no physical evidence and no witnesses of the abuse (other than the victims), Stanley was convicted of almost all crimes the prosecution had brought against him. The trial lasted four days and jurors deliberated for roughly eight hours over two days.

The Northeast Center for Special Care “provides care and rehabilitation to individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries” – generally caused by stroke, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and other catastrophic event. Stanley was an employed as a “Neighborhood Counselor” – whose duties included managing residents’ social environment and ensuring that residents participated in their required programs.

Stanley, however, grossly abused his position. The prosecution proved that between July 2014 and February 2015, Stanley used his position to gain access to multiple residents, where he proceeded to sexually assault the victims several times. Among other things, Stanley forced the residents to perform oral sex and raped another resident while he slept. Once the allegations arose, Stanley was immediately suspended (and then terminated) from the Northeast Center for Special Care.

Stanley was arrested in July 2016 and convicted on 24 counts of sexual abuse, committing a criminal sex act, sex abuse, endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, and willful violation of the health laws. Jackson, however, was acquitted on four of the most serious counts of predatory sexual act and three counts of first-degree criminal sex act. The jurors rejected the prosecution’s argument that, on two cases, the men that Stanley performed oral sex on were incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, Stanley faces a sentence between 8 and 25 years in state prison. Stanley will be sentenced on July 28, 2017.
