(914) 220-1086The development of a proposed group home for mentally disabled senior citizens in the Bronx hit a set-back this week when one of the potential investors pulled out of the project. The developer had been slated to operate many of the apartments in the group home. Its decision not to move forward with the project leaves the remaining parties in search of an additional mental health provider to take over the remainder of the partnership.
According to the story in the Daily News, many residents of the Riverdale neighborhood, the proposed home’s location, have not been in favor of the project since its inception. Some residents of the neighborhood feel that this project, and others like it that have sprung up in Riverdale, have devalued the property and made it a less desirable place to live. Democrat Jeff Klein, state senator from Riverdale, viewed the departure of the developer, Communilife as a qualified victory, stating that although the development of the group home could continue with another backer, the neighborhood had set a precedent that such projects would require community input in the future.
