A nurse’s aide at the Gold Crest Care Center in the Bronx was arrested in February 2013 after a hidden camera allegedly caught her abusing an Alzheimer’s patient.
Sandra Kerr, 55, was charged with Willful Violation of the Public Health Law and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person. She faces up to one year in jail if convicted.
Kerr’s arrest was sparked after the patient’s granddaughter, Diana Valentin, suspected her grandmother was being abused and hid a camera in a plant in her grandmother’s room. The camera caught Kerr abusing her grandmother.
Valentin said, “She grabbed my grandmother’s arm, twisted it back, lifted her up and slammed her into the bed.”
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said, “My office has zero tolerance for nursing home aides who abuse, neglect or harm the people in their care.
Valentin transferred her grandmother to another nursing home and plans on filing a civil suit against Gold Crest Care Center.
